The show was also a request show, with the audience screaming out songs and Mike and accompanist Andrew "Scrap" Livingston playing them all in stride. Some songs Mike hadn't played for years. Many of the fans wanted to hear Soul Coughing songs, but there are very few that can be done in a duet setting so Mike refused. And kept refusing as the same drunk guy continued to yell out "4 out of 5" at every opportunity. The only problem with the all request format is that we were treated to only one new song. I was hoping for more, but did get to hear a lot of my favorites, including "Looks," and "Rising Sign."
People, including me, have been insisting that Kings of Leon's new album Because of the Times is vastly different from their first two albums. After seeing them perform material from all three on Monday night I realize that was a misconception. In actuality what has happened is that the group has finally succeeded in capturing its phenomenal live sound on an album.
I saw them first a little over a year ago in the same venue. Already a huge fan, I grew to love them even more after witnessing the live show. When I last saw them they were four young boys about to break it big while on the road with U2. The boys learned a lot from that tour apparently. They are still young, but no longer seem frightened by the rows of fans singing along with every note.
At the show I overheard someone say that Because of the Times is an album that will bring rock and roll back from its very near death. I'd say that an album can't do that, but Kings of Leon, live, in your town, putting their all into an hour and a half long set will do the trick.
What Bird, Dosh and guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker did last night is nothing short of phenomenal. For each track they initially lay down bits of guitar, drum, violin and ambient noise that they then loop and distort as they play their instruments live over what they just created. Brilliant.
Oh and Bird can whistle like it's nobodies business. I resolved last night to see Bird each and every time he plays within driving distance. I suggest you do the same.
Sadie and I were able to see our favorite local indie-rockers last night at the Dame. They've been away on tour for too long. They were in great form last night. The songs sounded better than ever, and they even dropped a few new ones on us.
They did "Out of the Trash" for their encore.
